Why do we continue to screw our soldiers?
Bush, the "Commander-in-Chief" ( who evaded military duty himself ) does
not think that the brave soldiers fighting his "vanity war" deserve a raise
in pay. He does not think they should be entitled to a college education
when they leave the service. He refuses to support the GI Bill.
At the same time, Bush chastises Congress for not granting him unlimited
cash to wage war, claiming Congress is refusing to support the troups.
Congress did not pass the last bill to fund the war, in part, because
Bush said he would veto if the GI Bill was left intact. His thinking
seems to be billions for bullets, nothing for the soldiers who fire them.
Some in Congress agree with him. Sadly, John McCain, an actual veteran of
war seems to be siding with President Bush.
What is the logic? Bush claims it would encourage personal to leave
the military to enter college rather than to re-enlist. It is obvious now
why Bush was never successful in business. Any employer knows that good employees
are attracted by salary , loyalty and benefits. If Bush has his way
he will squash more pay, reduce benefits and, in so doing, display his total
lack of loyalty to his own troops.
Is it any wonder the military is having a hard time recruiting these days?
Would it surprise anyone that current military are eager to leave the service,
at least in part to Bush's obvious lack of support for them?
Would you join today if you were told you may get killed but you probably
won't get a raise and your college won't be paid for and if injured or wounded
you may not even receive proper care when you return home?
Plain stupid. If you want people to enlist you need to attract
them by offering something other than a dis-loyal leadership who is willing
to let you die but not willing to give you a decent wage or a college
education...or health care. Bush has become a walking, talking
advertisement for all the reasons NOT to join the military.
If you care about your friends, neighbors or loved ones in the services,
you need to start yelling at Congress now and demand they pass a decent GI
Bill with enough votes to over ride any Bush veto.
I would like to quote Obama here when he said, "I'm not opposed to all wars,
I'm only opposed to stupid wars". This is a stupid war, but never mind
that, those sent to fight it deserve nothing but the best from us while we
find a way to bring them home to their families.
