In virtually every state you can download a voter registration form. You have no excuse unless you are one of America's all-too-many disenfranchised from voting by virtue of a criminal conviction. ( Another tool of politics to eliminate competition )

A class-action challenge to the law was filed on behalf of 600,000 former felons in Florida just before the bitter 2000 presidential election, one marred by bitter claims of hundreds of black people mistakenly purged from voter rolls in Florida, many of them because they were listed as felons.

President Bush was handed the presidency by the high court, which froze the Florida recount with Bush holding a 537-vote lead.

Is it any wonder politicians don't want everyone to vote, particularly Republicans.

Only Florida, Kentucky, and Virginia, which all happen to be former Confederate states, cling to lifetime bans that can only be changed through individual appeals which can be nearly impossible to win.

But here is a hint some people fail to recognize. If you were convicted in a state that restored your rights to vote when you were released, then move to one of the above states, you can register to vote. For instance Florida's Supreme Court has said that if a person moves to to the state with their rights intact, they cannot strip them absent a new conviction in Florida. This applies to all civil rights including firearm ownership.  Even in Florida, an ex-felon can legally buy a firearm, even receive a concealed weapon permit if his rights were restored by the state where he/she was convicted prior to moving to Florida.

Amazingly, Florida's Governer Charlie Christ (a Republican) has taken some major steps to help ex-felons regain their right to vote.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Most Florida felons will regain voting and other civil rights more quickly after completing their sentences under changes approved Thursday by the governor and the state clemency board.

Republican Gov. Charlie Crist pushed the change, saying the rights to vote, hold office and serve on a jury were fundamental to being part of a democratic society.

You can move to a state that does not prohibit you from voting. ( People living in DC should move anyway ! )
